In order to track down my soulmate, I checked out people
that I had things in common with on Diigo.
I searched for comedy, writing, and satire, too, just to spice things
up. After sifting through the seemingly endless
amounts of spam, I managed to find Colin and a few other worthy potential
soulmates. What made me choose Colin
over the others was his use of tags- these tags illustrate that he is not only interested in comedy and writing, but also psychology, technology, and blogging (haaaay) just like me! But while I consider myself to be a pretty decent
bookmarker, my 124 bookmarks pale in comparison to Colin’s 18567 public
bookmarks. With all of these bookmarks, I figured it would be necessary for Colin to comment on specific ones, ensuring that he remembers to go back to them later, but he has not commented on a single bookmark. Thankfully, he's tagged them all into a relatively organized cloud, which is necessary when bookmarking one or more pages every single day. Giving 8-10 tags to each bookmark made it much easier for me to navigate through them and find exactly what I was looking for from Colin.
Upon further investigation, I recognized that Colin had bookmarked a page that I had seen a while back about comedy writing. I am not sure why I never read it, but Colin's interest sparked mine, and I found out that it is an incredibly useful page to check out. The article was listed on Scribd, was written by David Evans (writer for The Bill Cosby Show), and was aptly titled "The Seven Laws of Comedy Writing." In it, the pro comedy writer explains his seven essential tips for writing comedy. Colin also bookmarked a page that I found interesting- an article for the Chicago Sun-Times by Roger Ebert. In this article, called "Parrot asks, 'What'd the frozen turkey want?'," Ebert discusses some of his rules of comedy writing as it applies to standup comedy. He analyzes the ways in which some of the most popular standup acts of today execute these tips and make them successful.
Colin's bookmarking allowed me to find a few pages that were worth getting to know. I was able to round up a few tips for my future writing and check out some other funny pages by great comedic writers without doing too much digging around by myself. Overall, I would have to say it was a happy Valentine's Day, might have been a bit pathetic, but happy nonetheless.
